Jake Romer Earns Seven Wickets In Crushing Win For HBCC Thirds

Hale Barns Third XI registered their first win since the start of June thanks to a rampant display with bat and ball to overcome Cheadle CC by 162 runs.

Farhan Rabbani and Ahmed Choudhry both recorded impressive half centuries before Jake Romer took centre stage with a stunning haul of seven wickets to dismantle the Cheadle batting line-up.

The visitors struck the first blow of the day as Waseem Arshad (1-36) bowled Manny Grewal through the gate for 9 to reduce Barns to 35-1 after 12 overs.

Rabbani decided it was time to shift up the gears and targeted the boundaries, taking 15 runs off the 16th over. The Thirds captain hit eight fours to reach his third fifty in four matches, but was soon on his way back to the pavilion after falling to Z Ahmed (2-50) for a run-a-ball 53.

Junaid Iqbal enjoyed a short cameo worth 14 before departing with the score on 104-3, but Choudhry continued to occupy the crease and took over the role of aggressor as he built a promising partnership with Rob Martin.

The pair combined plenty of fours with some excellent running between the wickets, which eventually took its toll on Martin, who was forced to retire for 29 after running out of steam under the searing heat, ending the partnership on 82.

Choudhry continued until the end though and led the hosts to an imposing total of 214-4 after the team added 49 runs from the final six overs, with Choudhry completing the innings unbeaten for a fantastic 91.

Barns were eager to finish the job having gone over a month without a win and made the ideal start when Romer produced a breakthrough in the second over with just five runs on the board.

The youngster settled into his rhythm and doubled his tally before taking two wickets in two deliveries to leave Cheadle reeling on 25-4. Romer’s devastating stint continued and he was soon celebrating a fifth dismissal inside the opening 10 overs.

At the other end, Jack Wylie was unable to gain any reward for his consistent bowling as he beat the edge of the bat on countless occasions and saw a handful of confident lbw appeals turned down. In contrast, the wickets kept on coming for Romer as he ended his seven allotted overs with tremendous figures of 7-15.

And Wylie’s (2-7) luck finally changed in the eighth over of his spell, claiming two victims in two balls before being denied a hat-trick by the square leg umpire after calls for a stumping from Grewal were dismissed.

However, it wasn’t long before Barns wrapped up the innings as Joe Christopherson (1-8) grabbed the final wicket to complete the demolition, with the away team all out for just 52 in 17.4 overs.
