The Under 15s performed solidly throughout the 2017 season and were probably better than their fourth-place finish in the league suggests, winning four and losing three of their matches with one tied.
A disappointing early exit to Timperley in the cup – a close match that went down to the final over – showcased the talents of some of the younger players who competed well alongside old heads.
Ben Staniforth and Ollie Latter played for Cheshire U15s and Jake Romer and Hasan Qureshi played for Cheshire District sides, a fantastic achievement for a small club. More importantly, a number of the team played senior cricket later in the summer, with Ben, Ollie and Jake all playing for Hale Barns 1st XI.
Not many clubs have such a good track record of junior progression to the senior ranks.
HBCC also entered an Under 19 side into the new Cheshire T20 tournament for this age group in 2017, with plenty of Under 15s featuring. Despite a team that was on average younger than most of the opposition, Barns won the first three group matches to reach Finals Day, held in September at Bramhall CC.
Although the team were beaten in the semi-final by a Nantwich side full of county and first team players including one senior county representative, the youngsters rose to the occasion and competed brilliantly. This was certainly a great way to finish an enjoyable cricketing year.
